Maximum output. Total concentration. Ultimate staying power. Human beings and the materials are put under the most demanding test that the world of motor racing has to offer at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 2011, in one of the most thrilling and dramatic races in the history of Le Mans, Audi prevailed once again. More than 250,000 spectators on the racing track and millions of TV viewers throughout the world watched a thriller in which Audi, with the R18 TDI, was able to secure its tenth Le Mans victory. A key factor was the lightweight body of the R18: despite its low weight it was extremely strong – and was way ahead of the competition in the race.

“This weekend, the Audi ultra technology has passed an extremely difficult endurance test,” commented Audi Motorsport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich after the Audi crossed the finishing line. “Embarking upon new paths always involves a risk. But this risk has paid off completely. The Audi R18 TDI was in a class of its own at the Le Mans 2011.”

The developments created for extreme conditions in motor racing are also of benefit to drivers of Audi production cars.
